Nayyara Noor was born on November 3, 1950 in Guwahati in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, where she spent her childhood. Her family and ancestors belonged to the merchant class and lived in Assam long after emigrating from Amritsar, Punjab. Her father was an active member of the All India Muslim League and hosted Pakistan’s founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, during a trip to Assam before the division in 1947.

In 1957 or 1958, Noor immigrated to Pakistan from India with his mother and siblings, settling in Karachi. However, her father remained in Assam until 1993 to look after the family property. It is said that Nayyara was inspired by the bhajans of Kanan Devi and Kamla and the ghazals and thumris of Begum Akhtar as a child.

Although Nayyara had no formal musical background or formal education, she was taught by Asrar Ahmad of Lahore Islamic Institute after listening to her sing for her friends and teachers at the annual dinner at Lahore National Academy of Arts in 1968 Find. Soon after, she was asked to sing for the university’s Pakistani radio show.

In 1971, Nayyara made her public singing debut in Pakistani TV dramas and then began performing in films such as Gharana (1973) and Tansen. Since then, she has sung ghazals by famous poets such as Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz, and performed alongside legends such as Mehdi Hassan and Ahmed Rushdi.
